UK statistics on accidents and incidents

There have been a few - have a look at some that have happened in the UK over the years

Incidents and accidents at crowded events in the UK.

We are slowly compiling a list of incidents and accidents that have occurred at crowded events where people have gone to have a good time. The list is by no means exhaustive and does not include all festival/concert and gig related incidents. This is in part due to the fact that no one currently collects good quality statistical information about the number of incidents and injuries that occur. We know that many go unreported and are particularly concerned about the number of injuries sustained by individuals due to crowd surfing, stage diving and moshing.

Windsor Race Course. Part of a circus tent collapsed causing minor injuries to six members of the audience during a performance by Billy Smart's Circus.

Lloyds No 1 bar in Port Solent,Portsmouth. Peter Lawrence 37-year-old dad-of-one on a night out, was removed from the bar after arguing with door staff. He was then restrained by the bouncers outside on The Boardwalk. It was while he was being held that he stopped breathing and died.4 bouncers were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Otter St Mary annual fire barrels event - 36 members of the public injured during the event. Minor burns, broken ankles and crowd surge all add to the chaos.

Clifton Downs annual firework display - 3 members of the crowd injured when rogue rockets fires into the crowd.

Silverspoon nightclub Wembley - 2 people injured, one seriously in shooting at London nightclub where three gunmen fired indiscriminately into a crowd of about 300 people.

Notting Hill Carnival - 2 young people injured in shooting incidents and several stabbings reported during the festivities that attracted 600,000 people.

The Swan pub,Tottenham,North London also a nightclub, 17-year-old Annaka Pinto died from a single bullet wound after being shot on 23 June.

Isle Of Man - A rider and two spectators were killed in a crash during the Senior race at the centenary Isle of Man TT meeting. Two other people were injured.

The rider, who has not been named, died instantly in the smash and a second person was pronounced dead at the scene, organisers said.

A third person was taken to Noble's Hospital but died a short time later. Two other people were injured.


Loughborough University - A 21 year old student at the university, who was employed as a member of venue staff at the event, received gunshot wounds following a serious incident following a music event which was headlined by 'Pretty Ricky' at the Students' Union.

Oceana Nightclub Milton Keynes - 35 year old Simon McCarthy died in a fight at the club

Liquid Nightclub on King Street Wigan - 21-year-old man stabbed during a fight at a nightclub five other people were also stabbed during the fight

The People's club Holloway Road Islington London - A doorman was shot in the leg minutes after refusing to let three men into a nightclub in north London. A man waiting in the queue for the People's club was also shot in the heel when the gunmen aimed at door staff

The Edge club Lower Parliament Street Nottingham - Two men and a woman were injured in a shooting at the club

Libra nightclub Greyhound Street Nottingham - Nottingham man dead after stabbing at club

Creation Night Club Leeds - 27 year old Aaron Watson shot dead

The Arches nightclub Caversham Road Reading - man shot during Urban Music Event - seriously injured

Birmingham nightclub Edwards No.8 - 500 revellers flee major fire that guts famous nightclub

Egg Cup club York Way London N7 - 18-year-old Sharif Zaiden from Ladbroke Grove shot dead in nightclub

NEC Arena, Birmingham. Two stewards shot by man evicted from the venue for not having a ticket. One suffered serious injuries.

November 2005
Bristol, The Level nightclub. Oliver Lagaay sentanced to a years imprisonment for the manslaughter of Adis Kulo at the club during a drunken scuffle.

Wicksteed Park, Northamptonshire. Stray firework hurtles into crowd injuring 11 people.

The Cooperage, Plymouth, ceiling above the stage collapses, gig cancelled but no injuries reported.

August 2005
Fans run riot at Leeds festival, security staff injured crowd injuries unknown.

August 2005
Fans also run riot at Reading, injuries unknown.

Patrick Sherry, frontman from Bad Beat Review sustained fatal injuries when a stage dive went wrong. He died the following morning.

May 2005
Liquid nightclub Windsor - clubber Joanne Piednoir suffered serious spinal injuries when she was put in a headlock by Blue Kinane a bouncer at the club. She has been left disabled

Brixton Academy London, shots were fired into the crowd, fortunately no-one was injured but questions remain as to how a man was able to get firearms past security at this venue.

February 2005
Crowd surge at opening of Ikea store in Edmonton, North London. 4,000 to 6,000 people arrived for the widely advertised promotion where there was no infrastructure in place to deal with it. Five people received hospital treatment.

2/10/2004 Spotlight club London Road West Croydon - gunman shoots two men dead and leaves another wounded in the club

6th August 2004
Earls Court, London. A rigger working for Madonna's production team fell 30 foot whilst working at the venue, he sustained serious injuries.

Frank Buckley beaten to death by nightclub bouncers, 73 yr old woman also injured.

June 2004
60 Fans at Aberdeen's City Music Hall struck with 'mystery illness'

David Plunkett attended a Budweiser Music Event at Daytona Park Old Trafford. Booze flowed very freely at the event and David was 'unwell' security services saw fit to eject him from the venue. His body was dragged from the canal some days later.

May 2004
London Haymarket Theatre 15 people injured when ceiling collapsed.

March 2004
Yates Wine Lodge in Swinton, Greater Manchester. Frank Buckley kicked to death by bouncers employed at the venue. Christopher Zammit and Daniel Anderson were both jailed for murder. Brian Horrocks, James Backhouse, Gareth Brook , Pail Filer, and Lee Williams were jailed for violent assault. A 72 year old woman was also knocked unconcious by the gang.

January 2004
Lizard Lounge Bristol, Bouncer Martin White employed by the club convicted of GBH with intent and assault causing actual bodily harm. This translates to the fact that this 'bouncer' assaulted Mr White because he was falling asleep in the club. Mr White was left with a broken shoulder and has lost the sight of one eye - permanent and irreversable.

August 2003
Reading Festival, 20 year old run over by water tanker. Kieran Griffin found dead on site. One fan had part of his ear bitten off, one female fan was sexually assaulted.

October 2003
Billy Smart's Circus in Bristol. An acrobat fell 22ft into the crowd injuring a female member of the audience.

The Fez Club Reading - Bouncer throws customer down stairs causing serious injuries and knocks another unconcious

October 2003
Bradford on Avon. 23 yr old John-Paul Francis went with friends to see 'Seize the Day' His body was found in the river two days later, no one knows what happened to him.

Alexander Theatre, Birmingham. 20 people taken to hospital after a stage collapse, some believed to be seriously injured when 30 or 40 people fell 20ft into the orchestra pit.

August 2003
Leeds festival, during a System of A Down set the front stage of barrier moved, a young woman was trapped by her foot and 22 fans received medical attention.

Crowd trouble erupted at Sandhaven Beach, South Shields at the Galaxy FM pop concert where 10,000 people had turned up to party. One person was stabbed and 48 arrests were made. The injuries were never disclosed.

August 2002
Leeds festival, a 19 yr old man was found dead in his tent, though to be due to congenital heart problems. The festival was marred when hundreds of fans went on the rampage burning two toilet blocks to the ground and attacking police with missiles. Skips were set alight and electric cables torn down. It took 200 police officers to quell the rioting.

More than 250,000 people turned up for the free Fatboy Slim beach party known as the Big Beach Boutique, planners for the event had expected (and catered for) 60,000. During the ensuing chaos One person died when she fell from a promenade, one man suffered a fatal heart attack and scores of people were injured. The area in which the event was organised was in no way suitable to cope with crowds of that magnitude.

August 2001
Eminem at the Green in Glasgow, crowd crush injured 45 fans, seven had to be taken to hospital for further treatment.

Notting Hill Carnival, two men murdered.

May 1 st 2000
London, Reclaim the Streets demo 14 injured.

Over 100 people involved in football violence at Birmingham City/Wolverhampton Wanderers match, two serious head injuries sustained.

June 22nd 2000
Earls Court, London. David Mott fell 35m to his death at whilst working - the HSE brought a successful prosecution against the company.

Glastonbury Festival, Pilton Somerset. 28 year old man found dead in tent at festival.

The Point Theatre, Dublin 17 year old Bernadette O'Brien crushed to death in mosh pit at Smashing Pumpkins gig.

August 1994
Nottinghill Carnival, 115 injured

The Barbican Centre York East 17 concert 30 young fans (aged between 13 - 16) treated for effects of hysteria/ hyperventilation.

Hillsborough 96 people died and 750 people were injured with a further 36 sustaining injuries outside the ground. The official cause of the disaster was given as the failure of police control, putting that into a context it means that crowd control was the focus and crowd safety was not.

'Monsters of Rock' at Donnington Park two young men died and a third was seriously injured in a fatal crowd surge during during a rock concert during a Guns n' Roses set. What is forgotten is that there were in total three serious safety incidents. (see paper by Mick Upton) for the horrendous facts of that day.

Fire broke out at Kings Cross tube station. 31 people lost their lives.

August 1987
Notting Hill Carnival London. 13 police officers and 76 civilians were injured, most from gang attacks.

Bradford City Football Club, fire broke out at the Main Stand at the Valley Parade Ground, 56 fans were killed.

Hillsborough Sheffield crowd surge injured 39 fans.

Starburst Cabaret Club Ireland, 48 young people died and 128 were seriously injured when fire broke out in the nightclub. Although there were adequate exits the rapid spread of the fire resulted in the large death toll. The fire was a result of arson.

August 1976
Notting Hill London, 100 police and 66 carnival goers injured and admitted to hospital after clashes.

In a 1974
David Cassidy concert at London's White City Stadium, thousands of teenaged girls crushed against each other to get closer to the stage. After two days in a coma, one 14-year-old fan died of traumatic asphyxia, crushed to death under thousands of pounds of fellow fans. Five hundred more fans were injured, dozens had to be hospitalized.

Fire broke out at the entertainment kiosk at the Summerland entertainment kiosk in the Isle of Man. 51 people were killed it later transpired that emergency doors had been padlocked, turnstiles could not cope with the size of the crowd and it took staff 25 minutes to alert the fire brigade.

Ibrox, Glasgow, a crowd surge caused the barriers to collapse resulting in the death of 66 people and 140 injuries.

Burnden Park football ground, two crush barriers collapsed 33 people died and hundreds were injured.

Bethnal Greem Tube Station, 173 people died trying to get into an underground air shelter.
