More infoDerbyshire based Esteban formed under terrifying circumstances, backpacking in Bali during the terrorist attacks of 2002. Hanging out together around late night camp fires, stories were told about the world and its ways and the 4 musicians embarked on a life changing voyage to South East Asia where their eyes were fully opened to the world in which we live.
Late last year Esteban's bassist Ricky found out that his biological mother is from Guyana. “We made contact for the first time since I was born. For a kid raised in Derbyshire, discovering my roots far away in the Third World was amazing. It led me to think about what we as a band could do with our music to help those less fortunate than us. It's not as if we're rolling in dough ourselves, but I reckon we can make a small difference in people's lives.”
With this in mind, the band have teamed up with PLAN UK, an organisation that runs community development projects all over the world. PLAN UK and Esteban raise funds for education, sanitation and health programmes in deprived communities in South America. Proceeds from the band's record sales will go directly into these projects. The band are also working with a number of Derbyshire businesses to help raise further funding to help and improve life and the future of many less fortunate than ourselves. The power of music and a little bit of cash go far in these tough economic times.
Esteban are a breath of fresh air. Life affirming, soul stirring world pop music or, as they call it, Desert Funk.
“A touch of Latino here and the odd hint of afro rhythms there... exotic blend of funked-up indie and straight pop/rock with a twist... massively up-lifting and extremely likeable.” - Toxic Pete
