Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced a UK run for next March. The resurgent seven-piece released their Roadrunner/Loud & Proud debut, ‘God & Guns’, to critical acclaim on 28th September. Backed with strong radio support and great reviews in the UK, the album’s first week sale was a colossal 997% up on the previous album’s first week figure! Lynyrd Skynyrd are definitely back with a vengeance!
‘God & Guns’ was recorded in Nashville in late 2008 and early ‘09, with the project being interrupted - but, tellingly, not ended - by the deaths of founding member/keyboardist Billy Powell and longtime bassist Ean Evans earlier this year. Yet, the band rock on and are bringing their uniquely American sound to these shores in March.
2009 marked a key point in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s storied career. The band had a recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, their American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” passed the 2 million mark in downloaded ringtones in the US and last summer, the band co-headlined one of the most successful US tours of the year with their good friend, Kid Rock. With a catalogue of over 60 albums and sales beyond 30 million, Lynyrd Skynyrd remain a musical force to be reckoned with and a beacon for the Southern Rock genre. Beyond the tragedy, the history, the classic songs, ultimately, Lynyrd Skynyrd is about an indomitable will. About survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American, stubbornly resolute.
