From Night Fever to Dancing Queen, Kew’s open-air concert series this July promises to be one of London’s great nights out. Set on the lawns in front of the Victorian Temperate House, the annual “party for planet” boasts an all-singing and all-dancing line up for Kew’s 250th anniversary year, enhanced by a live big-screen relay and sizzling firework finale each night.
Banishing the blues, Kew’s favourite music maestro, Jools Holland, returns for his annual two-night stint at Kew, joined by the legendary Gilson Lavis, guest vocalists Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall, with special guest star Dave Edmunds - the guitarist, singer and proflifc rock producer.
With ABBA-mania going stronger than ever, the “imposters from the land of Fosters”, Björn Again, are back with their note-perfect vocals and fabulous faux-Swedish accents, in what Time Out New York dubbed “maybe the most entertaining live rock show in the world today”. Supporting Björn Again, Jive Talkin’, kick off an evening of disco fever with their Bee Gees Concert, a show endorsed by the Bee Gees themselves, and that Bee Gees fans everywhere have been raving about.
This year also sees the return of another long-time favourite at Kew, The Bootleg Beatles. Bringing the sights and sounds of The Sixties to life, the world’s premier Beatle band, backed by their fabulous string and brass ensemble, perform their spectacular multi-media stage production featuring all the classic Beatles hits, using film footage of the period. To warm up the crowds, Mick, Keith, Bryan, Bill and Charlie of the Counterfeit Stones rock out the classics, with their No.1 tribute to the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. With replica costumes, the trademark dance moves, much onstage banter and, of course, the wigs!
Friday sees the return of the fiery flamenco rock supremos, The Gipsy Kings, after an incendiary performance at Kew last year. Since the release of their international smash hit Bamboleo, The Gipsy Kings have dominated the World Music charts, and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. To open the night, the UK’s premier Latin band, Motimba, are also back by popular demand. Their spicy blend of very danceable, funky Cuban timba, salsa and reggae, all delivered with great humour in a mixture of Spanish and English, has won them a loyal following on the festival and club circuit.
Swing sponsor, Wines of South Africa, will be offering concert-goers the chance to sample a wide range of fabulous wines from the Cape. Their exciting range of red wines, chilled white, rosé and sparkling wines, will also be available to purchase at the event, all at retail prices, so there’s no need to carry heavy bottles to Kew. The vineyards of South Africa sit in the same footprint as the Cape Floral Kingdom, a biodiversity hotspot and world heritage site. The wine industry is committed to conserving this natural phenomenon and is setting aside land, on wine farms, to protect the natural flora and fauna of the Cape.
