The difference between the Fringe and the Festival?
One of the most frequently asked questions is “What’s the difference between the Festival and Fringe.
The basic difference is that the Festival is curated and the Fringe isn’t.
The festival has a team of programmers who go out and seek work to bring to Brighton, their ticket sales go some way to funding it. The Fringe is open access this means that anyone can take part, from professional to first timers. The events managers fill out a form and submit a fee but they take the ticket sale revenue not the Fringe.
Brighton Festival Fringe has been presented in a number of different ways over the years and between 1985 and 1995 its activity has increased ten fold. From 1995 to 2001 it was known as the Umbrella and in 2001 the fringe brought you 435 separate and distinct events.
Such a successful event demanded a little more so in 2002 it was decided to heighten the profile of the Fringe by producing a separate section within the Brighton Festival Brochure. In 2003 this was developed further into an independent brochure under the heading of Brighton Festival Fringe and the number of events again grew significantly. Latest 2007 figures are nearly 600 separate events, which can be on for just a single night or can do a 3 week run.
The Fringe exists to encourage the development and promotion of arts and entertainment activity in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding area during May each year. Participation in the Brighton Festival Fringe is open to all on payment of a fee, no one is invited to appear and no artistic judgment or selection criteria are imposed.
Brighton Festival Fringe now has a rapidly growing popularity and a big reputation within audiences, artist and companies worldwide and so the Brighton Festival Fringe is certainly making an increased impact on Brighton and Hove year after year. It's an opportunity not to be missed.
The Brighton Festival Fringe works in much the same way as the Edinburgh Fringe, The Avignon Festival Off and The Adelaide Fringe. Due to the Brighton Festival Fringes' ever growing popularity, it has the best chance of encouraging new arts activity and developing better services for artists and promoters.
Brighton Fringe brings you Fringe City! so ..what is Fringe City?
Fringe City is a celebration of everything in the Fringe; from music to poetry, from drama to dance, and everything in between. It takes place in Jubilee Square, with opportunities for every show participating in the Fringe to come along and show the public exactly why they should take in their show! In 2007 the Fringe had five stages, with performances going on throughout the afternoon, as well as specific 'busking spots', not to mention the BBC Blue Bus, and the First Direct magic bus, which showed video previews of Fringe events.
Where is Fringe City?
Fringe City takes place in Jubilee Square and Jubilee Street, by the new Brighton Jubilee Library. It's right in the centre of Brighton's North Laine area, as well as being a very small distance from the Dome Box Office, your first destination for tickets to Fringe shows. More tickets were sold during Fringe City 2007 than any other day in the history of the Fringe!
When is Fringe City?
Last year, Fringe City was on the 5th May 2007, the first day of the Fringe. In 2008, we're hoping to expand over more days; giving you more chances to sample the delights of the Fringe!
Fringe City - A real community event
So, not only is Fringe City a great opportunity for people with events in the Fringe to promote their show, it's a chance for the whole of Brighton to come together in what the Brighton Festival and Fringe do best; making this city a more fun and exciting place to live in. With 570 shows in the Fringe in 2007, there really is something for everyone, and Fringe City is a family-friendly free street party bringing every aspect of Brighton together. In 2007 it followed directly after the Children's Parade, and worked with local shops and businesses to ensure that the best of the Festival and the best of Brighton came together to make Fringe City a day to remember!
The Udderbelly returns!
You couldn't fail to miss the Udderbelly in the Fringe last year. After all, it's difficult not to see a massive upside-down purple cow grazing in the Old Steine, whilst inside, some of the biggest and most spectacular shows of the Fringe took place! From Stewart Lee to the Caesar Twins, not to mention the Festivals Club every night, and the Pasture for those essential after-show drinks!
The Fringe guys are pleased to announce that the Udderbelly will be returning to the Old Steine in 2008, with a fantastic line-up of Fringe events for your delight. Also, to accompany the Udderbelly, Udderbelly's Udder Place will be joining the cow on the Old Steine; a smaller, sister venue which will accompany the Udderbelly's line-up.
A true community event with something for everyone - the Brighton Fringe 2008 is set to be bigger and better than ever before - be a part of it.
