Society of Sound Stage for WOMAD announced

Gruff Rhys, Beardyman, Ben Watt and more confirmed

Real World and Bowers & Wilkins are presenting the Society of Sound stage at WOMAD 2014. Over the weekend the stage will feature an eclectic array of sound pioneers and musical adventurers celebrating the art of listening through live performances, DJ sets and interactive events.

Among these musical frontiersmen is former Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys, the Welsh maestro responsible for instant, psych-pop classic American Interior. Gruff Rhys has spent his career exploring the periphery of the rock, electro and indie musical landscape, unearthing a ghostly, ethereal and stirring range of sounds that have led him to be considered one of the most creative musicians in the UK today.

He will be joined by world famous beatboxer/musician Beardyman; described by BBC1 as the ‘King of Sound and Ruler of Beats’, he has taken what’s possible with the human voice to unchartered territories. Pushing the boundaries of his art ever further, Beardyman has also developed the world’s most advanced live music production system, aptly named the Beardytron 5000mkII - to allow him to improvise cutting edge, studio quality music in real-time. He will be premiering the Beardytron_5000Mkiii and creating an album live on stage; Beardyman ‘One Album Per Hour’.

Also coming to the Society of Sound stage is trailblazing musical polymath Ben Watt. After twenty years as joint singer-songwriter and primary instrumentalist in Everything But The Girl, and ten as an international DJ and label owner with Buzzin' Fly, Ben Watt returned to his folk roots in April this year with an acclaimed new solo album, Hendra- his first since his cult classic North Marine Drive, thirty-one years ago.

Other highlights include a rare DJ set from David Holmes,  and an equally rare public performance the legendary Radiophonic Workshop - influential pioneers of electronica – who will be presenting some of their best-known compositions and radiophonica live alongside new tracks from their forthcoming album 'Electricity'. From The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Timewatch, Newsround and Quatermass to their evocative recreation of Delia Derbyshire’s timeless theme from Doctor Who, this is a chance to see the group the Observer recently dubbed “the electronic Buena Vista Social Club”

The weekend will also be marking Real World Records 25th anniversary with some very special appearances including Real World Records favourites 9Bach, Justin Adams, Adrian Sherwood and Iarla Ó Lionárd.

WOMAD Festival takes place at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire from the 24 to 27 July 2014.
