Seu Jorge, Loyle Carner and Toko Telo added to WOMAD

Full global programme for the Wiltshire festival revealed

With just weeks to go before the most colourful global party in the world kicks off on a country estate in deepest Wiltshire, today WOMAD announces the final names to be playing the festival completing a line up celebrating the best of the best of global music, as the full programme is revealed on the website.

One of Brazil’s most talented and acclaimed artists, Seu Jorge will be playing his only UK festival show at WOMAD, with his distinctive mix of samba, pop and gentle soul. Jorge is best known for his role in City of God, and then as the enigmatic David Bowie singing sailor in Wes Anderson’s 2004 movie The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, which Jorge will pay tribute to in his WOMAD performance.

Also just announced are Malagasy super group Toko Telo, Finnish folk band Varttina Vocal Trio, who have been thrilling audiences for more than three decades with their unique vocal harmonies, exhilarating rhythms and imaginative acoustic arrangements, Spanish talent Prexton, who has made his name playing in ska and hip-hop bands before launching his current folk-oriented solo project and one of the forefathers of the UK dance scene.

Joining them will be Loyle Carner, without a doubt one of the brightest rising stars on the UK hip-hop scene, with his debut album ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ released to critical acclaim in January this year. His confessional style, sensitive and eloquent rhymes and smart beats incorporate easy-going soul and laid-back jazz, creating his own school of UK rap that refuses to conform to the on-trend grime template.

Hitting up the Ecotricity stage on Sunday, Ifé is the latest project from African-American DJ and producer Mark Underwood, mixing traditional rumba and other island rhythms with electronic styles which draw on house and Jamaican dancehall.

Elsewhere there's composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur and The Rajasthan Express, a group of Indian musicians, have combined to create Junun, a collaborative album showcasing Ben Tzur’s compositions which feature Sufi qawwal musicians who sing in Urdu as well as in his native Hebrew.

Over on the Big Red Stage are Brazilian-born DJ Markey and MC GQ who have been making waves on the London drum and bass scene for over two decades with their full-tilt club beats and laid-back house grooves. Plus Ifriqiyya Electrique who fuse ancient Tunisian rhythms and chants with 21st century global sounds.

The Nile Project and La Dame Blanche are unable to perform at WOMAD this year as they are unable to obtain the necessary visa to enter the UK.  An invitation has been extended to both these artists to perform at the festival in 2018.

WOMAD takes place at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury, in Wiltshire and will run from from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th July 2017
