Saturday's Zoo Thousand and Eight Festival seemed unfortunately to be beset with problems which cast a shadow over the event. With the main Tap 'n' Tin tent closed (the second stage) bands were being rescheduled to play elsewhere, and rumours flooded around about more bands who were pulling out to follow Dizzee Rascal, including Roni Size, Ash and the Cribs. The rescheduling caused confusion amongst the crowd who could no longer rely on their programmes to see the acts that they had come to see, and their frustration was beginning to show, with a palpable tension building thoughout.
In the midst of this the time for the Roni Size set came and went, and the Drum and Base crowd who had come to see them were getting agitated - and with more rumours of a Pendulum pull out they were looking forward to a great deal of disappointment. And then Hadouken appeared instead ...
Hadouken came out and literally gave a performance which may well have diffused all of the tension in the air and turned the festival around, despite shouting "pay your f**king bands you *****!" at the start of their set. They were professional, really rallied and connected with the crowd and got everyone back on their feet bouncing to their infectious beats and uplifting baselines, particularly their cover of "Breathe" by the Prodigy. If they were frustrated by the organisation of the festival they turned this energy into their perfomance, and it was quite literally superb.
Once Hadouken had finished, the Tap 'n' Tin tent was reopened, followed by the announcement of the Young Knives playing there again, and a confirmed line up which included Ash and the Cribs, and the festival seemed to be back on track again.
There are some other issues with this first year festival, but we are all hoping that they have now turned a corner and that Zoo will be returning next year.
