The festival was true rock and roll mayhem. Tales abound of Hell's Angels, insufficient food, some violence and plenty of chaos. The event caused such consternation to the establishment that future festivals on the island were banned and it was 32 years before the next festival could be held on the Isle Of Wight. It was also remembered for Jimi Hendrix, who played his last gig there on Sunday 30th August, on September the 18th he was dead.
But don't run away with the idea that this festival was a disaster, by far the majority of the 600,000 people who descended on the Isle of Wight that summer for a festival that ran from the 26th to the 30th of August had the time of their lives.
One such festival reveller was Bernard Rouan who, at the age of 28 travelled with his 17 year old brother Jean Louis arriving at the site two full days before the festival kicked off. Bernard told Safeconcerts that " it was fantastic for us. Every moment was a hit!"
Even better, Bernard took hundreds of pictures of the festival and has been kind enough to share them with us, the majority of the images are black and white but there are a few in colour. There are some images of the artists and many, many images of the site and the crowds.
Were you at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970? can you spot yourself in the crowd images? Better still - can you spot your parents having the time of their lives?
Safeconcerts would like to thank Bernard for sharing those wonderful memories held within historical and magical images.
