According to news reports today a 20 year old woman was arrested outside a Sheffield nightclub last July. It has now come to light that there is CCTV footage of one of the arresting Officers repeatedly punching her. Police are now facing calls for an independent inquiry into the incident.
Now that this has come to light the Officer concerned has been taken off front line duties.
It would appear that, at the moment, the Police are justifying these actions due to the fact that the woman has been convicted of a crime. The BBC's website quotes the Police official statement:
"We are satisfied with the way this incident was handled and happy with the conduct of the officer but we will investigate the circumstances of the complaint as we would with any complaint. "It is worth noting that as a result of the original incident the individual was convicted of a criminal offense."
Well that's all right then, but I just wondered - since when have two wrongs made something right?
