Roisin Murphy
Roisin Murphy's set at The Big Chill included all you could expect from an entertainer of this calibre including a full on version of Overpowered. Quick outfit changes throughout the set kept the interest peaked as she fell to the ground one minute and was straight back up looking different the next. Roisin really lets herself get taken along by the performance, and springs a number of surprises on her band, and probably herself, from wrestling her guitarist to the floor to wearing an odd circular contraption over her face. She is one hell of an entertainer and a quality singer with a unique voice - there's no mistaking the Murphy effect and when she finishes the set with Bang Bang and has a big fight (fake!) with her backing singers you know you've got more than had your money's worth with this gig.
Born in Ireland but moving to Manchester at age 12 Roisin Murphy has led an interesting and varied life so far which has probably contributed to her unique performing style. Meeting up with Mark Brydon in 1994 led to the emergence of Moloko and 4 successful albums were made by the band before they parted company. Roisin Murphy recorded her first official solo material in 2004 with producer Matthew Herbert, who had previously done remixes for Moloko. She released her debut album Ruby Blue in June 2005 in the UK on Echo Records.
Overpowered' is the second album released in October 2007 which she co-wrote and co-produced - a breathtaking and highly contemporary album that shows the unique and edgy nature of her work whilst also being readily accessible - leading the way for a whole new tranche of music fans to discover the magic that is Roisin Murphy.
