The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt brought their blend of comedy and music (with just a little bit of tongue-in-cheek) to the Big Chill and pulled one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. Their alter egos Vince Noir and Howard Moon were joined inevitably by Naboo (Michael Fielding), Bollo (Dave Brown) and Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher), with guest appearances from the Hitcher, Rudi van DiSarzio, Lester Corncrake and the Moon, of course.
Starting the show in drag, and having more costume changes than Roisin Murphy, there was something for everyone, particularly the hordes of screaming Noel Fielding fans. Packed full of energy, infectious tunes and enough comedy to keep the interest, the Boosh proved that their appeal was more than just speculative hype.
Rich Fulcher, whose performances still manage to make me feel more than a little uncomfortable, is one of the few people who could make Messers Fielding and Barratt's brand of surreal comedy look practically mainstream. From his robotic erection to sleazy bingo caller, not forgetting Bob Fossil's undersized shirt, he always manages to keep a firm share of the attention, regardless of the surrounding mayhem, and this performance was no exception.
Though fans of Crimp would have been disappointed, the performance was everything that a devout fan of the Mighty Boosh (and even those who have a passing admiration) would want, covering as many of the firm favourites as they could in under an hour. How many times you could watch the Mighty Boosh as a festival act I am not sure, but there is something about these boys which can captivate an audience, and their mix of off the cuff comedy and catchphrase based "repeat until funny" lines will ensure that they will always be a great crowd pleaser without becoming repetitive.
