In what must be one of the most scenic festival sites in Europe, the Nice Jazz Festival has a mix of established acts and also new acts too.
Dee Dee Bridgwater has an impressive discography, the Jazz Diva specialises in tributes amongst contemporary tracks. She seemed excited to be back in Nice appearing at the Jazz Festival and this was her first visit there since she last performed at the Jazz festival in 2007. Switching effortlessly between French and English between the songs, her warmth radiated the audience.
Singing a cover of the Billie Holiday classic, God Bless the Child, she demonstrated that she still has a strong soulful voice. A standout number was Afro Blue from her Red Earth album. Dee Dee’s daughter China Moses joined her mother on stage for the final songs of Save Your Love For Me and Everyday I Get The Blues for an epic end to her set.
Erykah Badu released her classic first album Mama’s Gun in 2000 and quite a few of the tracks from that album were performed during her electrifying set. Appearing on stage in 6nich heel pixie boots, a capped trench coat and leggings she cut a stunning and commanding figure. Her choice of 20 Feet Tall as an opening number was an apt choice! Apple Tree and Love of My Life showcased her vocals to the maximum. Her live appearances are a rare occasion but she still makes it look so easy and wanting more.
