Went to see Killswitch on sat 28/9. weird lay out, sheffield academy much better. Got phone nicked along with 20 other people in the mosh, some pickpocket had a field day. Staff quite helpful though, but the bouncers were useless. learnt a lesson, don't take anything of value to gigs lol.

I have seen both of these acts live at a hardcore dance event and singing live will blow you away. Recon ( mike di scala) has a ace voice even for a scoucer. And darren styles know how to get the crowd going. bang em together i cannot wait to see them away from the hardcore scene and more commercial.

I've seen both the Metal Hammer Defenders Of The Faith II Tour - Five Finger Death Punch, Unearth, Dimmu Borgir and Lamb Of God (11th Feb 09) as well as Sanctorum, Exilia, God Forbid and Ill Nino (22nd March 09) in the downstairs main hall. LoG being my first gig at this venue, my brothers first ever gig. I had to move around loads to find a place suitable for him (he was scared and little) Gig was amazing, great hall, great sound, great lighting/effects etc. Only downside was the staff on the door, understandably they needed to be strict. But my brother got separated and scared, they wouldnt let me back in to find him after, my friend couldnt find him/see him because I had her glasses. Ill nino gig was flawless, almost too good. Met every band member outside before and after =]
Also saw Pilgrimz, Eyes Of A Traitor and Gojira (21st March 09) upstairs. I prefer smaller gigs, more intimate. Although LoG are my favourite band, experience of Gojira won it. Talked to staff when getting drinks, very nice, polite and infornative. Plus free water VERY good and well used. plus cloakroom system very efficient and easy, and cheap. Only downside was drinks at Ill Nino were 2 times as expensive as at LoG (probably recession related) but venues are always expensive so was quite good for a venue.
Overall Upstairs venue - 10/10 Downstairs - 9/10 just say 5/5 =]

My lad and a mate were at Rise Against on Sun Feb 22 09. Both lost their phones in the mayhem. If anyone picked up a 3-day-old Nokia 5800 touchscreen with an Orange PAYG simcard in it, or an old Sony-Eriksson held together with tape (!) let me know on this forum and I'll find a way to get in touch. Nothing against the Academy in this, I think it was a wild gig and they should have been more careful. Good news is that they both said it was still worth it! Just tie your phone to your arm or something...

It is a good venue the best in the area. The right size for a mood to spread and a moment to be shared. They need bigger visual monitors upstairs, cleaner and better smelling bogs and more bar staff.

I have been here numerous times now and i do agree that its not the best venue in the world. But every time i have gone i have managed to get into a great position and see everything of the show - even when its a fully sold out gig (last band was Good Charlotte). The atmosphere on a good night with a good band is far better than that of a big venue and the sound and lighting is good for the venue's size. The security team seem fine when i go and i have only seen them throw people out who crowd surf - there are ALOT of signs all over the front of the stage stating your not allowed to do this and you may be ejected from the place if you do, its their own fault. As far as disable access goes i have not looked myself but there seems to be staff you can ask if you need help with it. The reason it gets so busy is because its the only real music venue of the city (and Bristol is a fairly large City) so this small Carling Academy is the place to go for everyone who likes music - the capacity is 1,600 and sells out a lot of bands, i have been there 5+ times now and am going again in a few days, i just love it!
